Move Exchange 5.5 To a New NT Server

I am researching the best way to move my NT 4 Exchange 5.5 server to a brand new server.

If anyone can add some tips or URL's, that would be helpful.

Any Do's and Don'ts?

If you would like to share your experiences moving Exchange please do.

I am sure people come to this forum for advice on doing this all the time. So maybe we should get long thread going.


My first questions is how to handle bringing up the new server with a different site name, than renaming it after everything is done. Or should I bring it up on a different subnet with the same name?
Second. If I just join the existing site can I eventually rename the new one with the old ones name?

We were in a similar situation. Basically I installed a BDC on our network, our Exchange was on a BDC, disconnected it and then rebuilt it with the same specs, service packs and so on as the original exchange server. When I installed Exchange 5.5 I named it the same as our first server. Then I used an online backup to restore the priv and pub. I can give you much more detailed instructions on how to accomplish this if you prefer.

Do you have a backup of your exchange server? More specifically your priv and pub?

If you decide to join an exisiting site and then later change the sites name I am not sure how that would effect your exchange server. I have renamed our site but I had to make changes in the registry since the DN had to be changed. It did work but it took a bit of configuring. When I first installed exchange I used the wrong site name. In order to restore from my online backups I had to change the site name to that of the original server. This was on a test machine though.
