Move Access database and ASP pages to non-IIS server

I had a site running from my home server for a long time, but it's proving too burdensome on my bandwidth. The database is MS Access, and the pages pull data through a DSN.

I have my own website hosted elsewhere, and that host uses cPanel. It's a Linux server running Apache.

Obviously, an Access database won't work in that situation, and I really need to offload this resource drain.

I've heard of MySQL but I've never used it, nor created databases with it. Any helpful tips or suggestions? I'd really like to be able to just simply convert the database over and be done with it, but I don't know what I'm doing.

Thanks!

My suggestion would be to find a different ISP.
If you have existing code, and an existing Database, the difference in price to host it somewhere that has an IIS server is going to so nominal that it isn't worth the hassle of rewriting your code and redoing the database in something that is open source.

What if I actually wanted to move this over to MySQL. What are the best tools to do this?

mySQL has import tools like most other DB systems, you can export all your access information ( if not directly port it into mySQL, not too knowledgeable about mySQL unfortunately ) either directly or with a mid stage like DB4 or CSV's, as for the ASP's that's going to be a burden, apache tends to only like CGI and PHP, and the code will need some overhauling to go from VBS/JS to that environment, if you have to learn one or the other to translate the pages i would lean towards PHP due to several similarities with ASP.

personally, i would consider it a project to fiddle with, but i wouldn't want to move it from it's current place unless direly necessary, and if so .. leave it in it's already tested and functioning form before trying to fiddle with datasource or source code.

i agree with find a different ISP even for a 6 month contract just to leave it as it is, and give yourself / dev team time to overhaul it for the new environment if it has to go there.
