Mouse will not work on startup in windows me 1

Any helpful tips to get mouse working. On start up message spool 32 error then grey screen for backround. Mouse will work in SAFE MODE, however I try to clean up in safe mode and the files will not delete. I must assume one of my beautiful children was using pc. I have AVG and Zone alarm fire wall. But somehow missed something maybe? I tried hijack this but cannot check anything without a mouse and cursor will not move into any of the boxes I want to delete. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

This is a common problem with games that kids have been playing. Go to Start, Run, in the white box type msconfig.
Once the msconfig screen comes up select the system.ini tab, find mouse the line should have this: drivers=mmsystem.dll
If it does edit the line and enter the line above.

Thanks mrfixit I will give it a shot on my lunch hour...however i saw a line in there but no driver was listed last night. I think it said sys.ini= is all so maybe if I edit that line maybe?

Yes, I should have said does not. The file should have a listing for mouse. If no mouse is listed add one to the list.

well I tried it no luck..the only thing in system ini folder was boot and printer. not sure how to add mouse, i clicked on new then typed mouse then your info mr fixit. rebooted and same ole thing no mouse any other suggestions i can try or if possible some detailed instructions on how to add mouse i tried in safe mode and live mode seems something has corrupted it as the spool 32 message still appears on start up. thanks again for your help maybe load a new mouse driver??

Ok lets try this Right click on My Computer, Select Properties, Select Device Manager, Go down to Mouse and select properties, then select update drive. See if that will work for you. I would reload the driver (last Thing to do).
If you know what game it was . It might be starting when you boot.
Go to Start, Run, in the white box type msconfig, select the start-up tab, go down the list and make sure no games are started on boot-up. You can also do a restore before the point where you started having mouse problems.

Ok here we go...that took care of spool 32 error and I got my mouse working, however my monitor settings will not change when I go to control panel and reset them.I change the setting and restart but they wont change. things are larger than normal and fuzzy. seems something else is amiss, I ran AVG and found nothing, ran spybot nothing. also it appears as if the pc is in safe mode with the grey backround however it is not. it used to be blue but I cant even find that in control panel under display. it looks like the whole screen is outlined with a dotted line. I appreciate all of your advise and thank you for your time. if you have any suggestions I am all ears. Thanks Again...

In the middle of your desktop Right click and select properties.
Go to setting. Your screen resolution should be set to 16 bit high. If it is anything less change it to 16 bit high.

I thank you again up and running smooth... Had a damn spy file that was breeching my spy bot was not letting it run properly..got some help from an old buddy in IS dept at work he sniffed it out right away. in closing thank you much later on...
