Anything electrical has the potential to catch fire through a short or other event that would cause heat. It doesn't have to get warm, just get warm upon a short or other electrical problem. I've witnessed heat in common household electronics and in batteries. I have a reliable witness that has witnessed a monitor fire before.

In fact, there's a potential for any component in a computer to catch fire if left unattended long enough. If you've ever had a computer smell like smoke, it's a fire waiting to happen if you were to leave it and not unplug it.
In a school computer room at a middle school with computers likely left on 24/7 and people not in the room continually (as in the article, it says no one was in the room), it would not be out of the question for someone to not know, or ignore it if something was smoking.

I have a reliable witness that has witnessed a monitor fire before.

I too have witnessed a monitor fire... but we are talking about the difference on 5v DC/500mA and 30000V+/16A here...

and to tell you the truth, never ever seen a mouse go up in flames in the past 25 years of using them...

but NOTHING is impossible, in my book, except maybe for man to understand woman...

Of course you can always ask, but would any change ever happen? This was the default in my last work-place, to leave computers on 24/7 (though logged off by inactivity timer or otherwise).

It's the same in my workplace. I have it as the default for several reasons:

- anti-virus and/or anti-spyware scans
- Microsoft updates
- other software updates
- any other required maintenance, troubleshooting

We lock out our users between midnight and 5:00 AM. All possible scans, updates, and maintenance is scheduled within this time frame to minimize downtime during the work day.

It is the same for most of our customers, e.g. Cluster running 24/7, and the WS of several scientists also...

most would start a calculation that runs all night or days on end...

I've also been known to leave my own WS at home (3 in all + HomeServer) running 24/7, all hooked up through 2 KVM switches, during vacation or days off...

We're "Greening" up. At the moment we request pc's are powered off, soon forced shutdowns will occir (exceptions will be made).
Then any patches, upgrades, etc etc will be done via WOL.

Estimates at cost savings are in the thousands per year.
