I am having a weird problem. I can't use my mouse to double click to open a program on my desktop.I have swapped the mouse and no change. I can open a program by right clinking on a program and clicking on open and the program opens normally. Any suggestions???
Thanks in advance.

Check Control Panel/ Folder Options, see what you have checked in "Click items as follows".

Make sure you have selected the check box that specifies that you want to single-click an item to select it and double-click an item to open it.

hello linney- I check that and it is set for 1 click to select and double click to open. The mouse works fine once I get into a program but not to access it. Strange problem!!!

thephonelady,

Mouse brand, model, driver version?

I will not offend you by asking if in Control Panel, Mouse, you have checked the properties.

Odd things happen with mice, and as a first guess I would use Device Manager to "Roll-back" the device driver.

Please post the details asked above.

Best,
Bill Castner

Curious: did you install any software for your mouse? Did that on my laptop and it caused all kinds of strange things to happen with the mouse and the touchpad.
Uninstalled the software and re-installed the touchpad software, then simply plugged the USB mouse back in and now all works fine.
Is this a USB mouse or PS/2?

The test continues...

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with the mouse.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

Thank you all for your suggestions!!! I ended up doing a system restore back to a date before my brother-in law made some changes on the computer and "MAGICALLY" it's wkg fine!!!! LOL!!!
