I don't know if this is just an XP problem or not, but every few hours the mouse starts acting up. I have a USB wireless optical mouse on an XP Pro machine. It starts "shaking" and will only stay on half of the screen. If you move the cursor to the other half of the screen and stop, it automatically moves it back to the left hand side. It will also start hi-liting all of the icons on the desktop. I'm not sure what is causing this.

How fresh are the batteries in the mouse and the receiver?

Could be something interfering with communications between the mouse and the receiver. Are there any other IR devices nearby (many printers have one built in). Try relocating the receiver (closer) and also make sure it's clean and unobstructed.

I had a similar problem once and it turned out to be the mouse was going nuts after sitting in the sun for awhile.

There should be a button on the mouse and/or the receiver which will cause comms to reinitialize, possibly on an alternate frequency. Try using it when it is acting up.
