I recently bought an athlon 1.4ghz motherboard. When the computer first boots, my mouse and keyboard do not work. my icon is frozen in the middle of the screen. If I restart, it will load after the first or second RE-boot. i have reinstalled the drivers for the keyboard and optical mouse, but it hasn't helped it. they are ps/2's. Any ideas? Thanks, James

What is the motherboard make and model?

Have you adjusted any BIOS settings at all?

It is a ECS K7S5A with SIS735 chipset. Haven't seen where or how to change anything in BIOS.

Are you using SDram or DDram? with your system? this board takes either.
This board has had problems when running SDram and is cured by going DDR.
Also what version?
I had lots of problems with an early version of this board(4* in the corner) later versions much more stable (3.1)
My local dealer also confirmed similar problems with earlier boards and SDram with particular setups. Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!

I'm using pc2100.. is that considered SDram or DDR? I thought I was buying DDR. also, my board is v3.1

are you setting the voltage for the cpu correctly?

I have an AMD approved 300w max ps. I only run a cd-rw, a: drive, 1 hdd. my bios doesn't allow me to adjust the voltage. Jumpers? I'm having to restart my windows about 3 times now to get my computer to operate. What puzzles me is that i can get it to work after a time. It seems to me that if it was the power supply it would be consistant. I've talked with others about flashing bios and they haven't suggested it. What could be the problem? could it be bad pc2100 DDR ram? if so, why? I'd appreciate any help.

ECS K7S5A with SIS735 chipset v3.1
Athlon 1.4ghz
GeForce 2 mx 400 w/tv out 64mb
24x10x40 cd-rw
20g Max Hdd 7200 rpm
generic a: drive

Thanks,
James

PC2100 is DDR SDRAM. If you have 2 modules, try removing one (but you may need to be careful about which slot you leave empty!). This will prove if one is bad or not.

Try setting the BIOS to use the manufacturer's defaults - you'll have to nudge the FSB speed up to 133Mhz from 100 though. Adjusting the voltage on an Athlon XP is definitely not recommended, unless you're following one of the expert overclocking guides, such as the one on Anandtech or Sharky's Extreme.

Flashing the BIOS is a last resort to fix a definite problem. It can stop the computer from working, if the procedure fails, so again, I wouldn't recommend this unless you have exhausted every other avenue.

Could also be a heating issue - this is very, very common with AMD chips.

I hope this helps

Sounds to me like the mouse and keyboard are in the wrong ports? i see it happen too often. double check this, the mouse goes towards the middle of the case, i know it may sound stupid but its best to start with the basics.
