Hi, back in Feb. of this year I posted a problem with my curser freezing, I thought the problem was solved until today. The Mouse is frozen, i know that windows is not. I can receive email notification, instant messenger pop's up with contacts. I can load a CD, I tried re-installing my optical mouse driver, using up and down arrows I can get through most of the promps but when it comes to sign yes or no on the software agreement I cant check it off. My point is that Windows XP Pro is running. The problem is with the mouse, I tried another mouse with out success. I have re-booted several times but no luck with that. I went to safe mode but wasn't able to anything without the mouse.
Need some help with this one.
I am using a Dell Demension 4100 running Windows XP Pro.
Thanks for any help,

A List of the Keyboard Shortcuts That Are Available in Windows XP

Here is the original post.
Mouse freezes on Windows XP Pro
thread779-1193219

See if the first article helps you complete the driver install.

You might be able to make use of BartPE (a mini XP self contained on a bootable CD and run from CD). This would help eliminate your Windows install as the problem if your mouse played up in that.

Is there any Bios update available? Can you try a different type of mouse, a different connection into the computer?

If you fixed it last time, try that method once more.

Hi, using the keyboard short cuts i was able to install the driver for the optical mouse. However it didn't help. I did try a standard mouse and my optical mouse from my laptop and had no luck. Since I was able to use the keyboard shortcuts I worked my way to Windows Restore and ran that back a week. When it rebooted the problem was still there.
Last time (in Feruary) when the mouse froze, all I had to do was reboot and it would recover. This went on for weeks without a problem. Ocasionaly I would get a frozen mouse and I would just re-boot and the problem would be solved. However this time re-booting does not help.

I think you will have to try your mouse away from the Windows environment or on a different machine. I appreciate this is not easy but how else can you tell whether it is a software or hardware problem?

Have a look here and see if you can get any other clues.

Hmmmm!
Is this a PS/2 connection or USB?
Any external port can be open to static electricity that can damage the port and disable the mouse.
If you are running a USB mouse you may have an issue with corrupt USB port drivers. unplug everything that is USB th the computer and plug the mouse in a different USB port to see if it recognizes

If the Mouse is PS/2 then try a USB mouse and get a hold of Dell to see if you can get a replacement motherboard.
make sure you backup all your data you want to save because Dell may reset your drive to its original state and you will lose all your data.

if neither work....you have seriously fried your ports from a static discharge event and you will be FUBARED with that computer...it may be time at this point to upgrade.

Either way you should call Dell

Have you tested the original mouse on another machine?

You've not yet enlightened us as to what type of interface you're using for the mouse in this Dell 4100. If it's USB, then do you know if other USB devices (printer, flash drive etc.), work in the port(s)?

I still occasionally revert back to something like Checkit which is a DOS diagnostic programme to check ports, mouse operation, etc.

Hi,I'm using a USB port for the mouse, I have also tried my USB laptop mouse on the desktop. I have tried using a standard non-USB mouse. I have 6 seperate USB Ports, I know that they are all functioning because I have a printer and wireless card connected. I tried several different ports, with my mouse. I was wondering if I should try re-loading XP PRO?

Hi Thanks for your help, I rebooted using XP start up and having my old original series (Ps/2)mouse plug in. It recognized the old driver, and the curser is now working. thanks for all the assitance.

Boy do I have egg on my face! The system is back to freezing, after operating without a problem for seven hours I found it frozen. I thought the problem was solved when I eliminated the Logitech Optical mouse (USB)connection, and used the standard series mouse. However I rebooted and I am able to be running until the next freeze. I want to mention that in the last few weeks I have replaced the Power Supply, and added an additional fan to the desktop. Trying to help elliminate any over heating.I have run adware, spyware and virus protection just about every week.
This is a problem that seems to be on Microsoft Help forums, that others are having, yet I don't see anyone that has had any luck solving it.

Am willing to try anything, need Help!@@@@

This is slowly progressing into becoming a "live with it or chuck it" type of solution. I hope you have all your valuable data backed up.

Have you considered a format and clean install as a last resort before spending money on replacement and expensive computer parts?

Programs like this will check out your hardware and run stress tests on your machine to see if you can reproduce any faults rather than waiting hours for them to show up.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Windows (second time around).

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try another user in case your profile is corrupt.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
