Is there a way to mount a cd iso disk image in Windows XP (as you can in linux and mac os x)? I assume that due to differences in design in operating systems this is not a default thing you can do in Windows, but is there some software I can download for free that will do it?

Well it won't mount it as a drive but WinRar will read .ISO files

Try the Daemon-Tools. It can mount nearly every known image file.
Therefor it install 1 - 4 virtual SCSI-Drives on your PC.
These virtual Drive(s) have all the Features of a physical Drive plus some more.

I use it for over a year now and it keeps getting better with every version.
