Environment: HP 7845 Pavilion running Win/me (ya, I know)
Phoenix BIOS Revision 2.06 11/17/00

I have about 25 email from HP support trying to tell me how to determine the type of motherboard I have on my PC, (Cognac or Tortuga). I need to know this so I can disable the onboard graphics adapter so I can install a new graphics accelerator card.

There appears to be no way to disable this onboard adapter either via the BIOS setup or the Device Manger. Every time I think I have it disabled a reboot finds it and reinstalls it. Doesn’t appear to be anyway to stop this either. In the BIOS setup there is a “comment” on the advance page to “SELECT Disable to disable onboard adapter” but there is no way to select that option.

Does anyone know how to do this?

Would a small hammer work?

Thanks,

Ken

You could use AIDA32 or another utility to id all your componets in your pc. AIDA32 is a freeware system information utility which can found at:

After running AIDA32 you should be able to ID your MB then goto:

where you can download a manual or at least get more info.

As to actually disabling your onboard video I can't help as I don't have access to this type of pc...you'll have to do more reading and/or investigation...good luck!

Cheers

A lot of those HPs don't have a jumper or an option in the bios to disable on-board video. I've got one, and what I had to do was right click the on-board adapter in Device Manager and click properties and check "Disable in this hardware profile" and shut the computer down (don't reboot). Then install the new card and move the monitor cable to it and power on the PC. When it has booted up, then install the new drivers for the new card. The old onboard graphics adapter should be disabled with a red "X" showing. That's the only way the one I own would work. Your's may be different.

braddds, I downloaded AIDA32 and guess what it returned for motherboard type? "unknown".

Jim, the option to "Disable in this hardware profile" is not in my version of the device manager, and doesn't appear to be in the BIOS anywhere.

According to HP if I reboot and then hold down the Control/Shift and hit the S key it will return a window with the motherboard type on it, but this does not work with this PC.

Since the BIOS in this system is from Phoenix I have sent an email to them, because HP sure doesn't know how to help me.

I very close to using the hammer approach.

Have you tried installing the new card? Sometimes the new drivers will disable the old onboard video.
