HI,

I was wondering if anyone knew for definate is it possible or should be practiced that you can have more than one switch in a vtp domain that is in vtp "server" mode?

I thought you could only have one vtp "server" mode switch in an vtp domain.

This came up in a ccna question. Any help appreicated.

regards,

Alistair.

On a network, you can have multiple VTP servers each within a unique VTP domain but an individual VTP server switch cannot exist in multiple VTP domains - it can only belong to one.

Hi thanks for this. What I mean when I say server is the vtp modes, either "server", "client" or "transparent".

My question is say if you have 10 switches all in the same vtp domain, can two of them be in vtp "server" mode. Or can one vtp domain only have one switch which is in vtp "server" mode and the others are in either client or transparent mode.

You can have 2 in fact it is smart to have 2 , if one switch crapped out the vtp domain would continue to function off the second server , otherwise with only one and it died you would probably be out of the water.

You can have as many switches in server mode as you wish. However it only really makes sense to have 2 VTP servers for most situations. This provides you with some resilience in the event you lose one of the VTP servers.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Cool, so in an answer for two CCNA questions I had on fault finding for a switch vtp domain, one of the answers was, "there can only be one vtp mode "server" in a vtp domain", so obviously this wouldn't be an answer to pick then!

They display two switch configs in the question and both were set to vtp mode "servers
