More than one read/write at a time to same file and file collapses

I have problem a big problem when my java program which is actually CGI-pr. is reading or writing to file. Everything goes as it should when there is only one user at a time but when two users update the same file at a same time there is problems..
So I´m asking if there is any ways to handle this kind of situation.. I hope I did my self clear! ;))

Make the file update method synchronized.
