I was using my PC this morning (burning a disc) and the monitor began to "fall sleep" and wouldn't wake up. I tried turning the monitor off and turning it back on (for what it is worth it degaused successfully). The monitor would come on, but would fall back asleep. I tried shutting down the computer, turning everything off, and rebooting. The monitor still had difficulty coming on and staying on.
My questions are these: 1)What is the best procedure for checking to see if it is the monitor or the port on the back of the computer itself?
2)If it is the port, can someone tell me what that would entail to replace it and CAN it be replaced?
Thanks.

UH OH... the situation getting better apparently was temporary. This morning I went to turn on my computer and it won't boot up... the power button light flashes on. The monitor doesn't turn on either, so I can't see what is going on to troubleshoot the problem. By the way, I tried plugging in my father's monitor to see if it was my monitor again, and his monitor wouldn't turn on either. Any suggestions? I am succeeding in preventing myself from having an absolute temper tantrum about it, but it is getting harder as the minutes go by. Thanks for any help. :o(

If a different monitor did not work, ir could mean the video card is bad, Since it happened when you just turned it on, the heat issue is most likely not there.

My suggestion, is to open the pc case. Look for the card and check that it is properly seated in the slot.

If it feels a little jittery, pull it out and put it bacxk in making sure any screws are tight enough to prevent it from moving.

If all else fails, start scouting for a new video card.

OK, one more question... Is it customary for the power button light to flash on and off when the video card goes bad? In other words, let me break it down in increments... when I hit the power button, it turns on. BUT, it will not do anything but make a high pitched beeping noise and the power button flashes on and off in conjunction. The beeping noise stops, (as it only does it once), but the monitor won't turn on as if it is not getting "juice". *mental note to self - back up your files when anything weird starts happening because you may not get the opportunity to do so after it officially screws up.*

Seems like the monitor works off and on, right?
I wonder if you dont have a short in a cord or one of the pins is broken but works, maybe on a certain angle or something like that.

Beeps have different meanings for different motherboards. We will need to know the manufacturer of you MotherBoard, and the model, so we can find out what one beep means. But it definitely means something is wrong. Probably the video card
has gone bad.

We need the make and model of your PC, and motherboard if possible before we can go any further.

vacunita,
i went home and open the case, cleaned it out really well, after I removed the video card. I cleaned the card too... at any rate, I put the card back in and it works fine. I found out (unfortunately after I did a lot of running around) that my father had downloaded a game and for whatever reason, my video card did not like it at all. I discovered it because he had mentioned he was playing a game the night before. When I tried to open the game it literally would not open and the monitor went to sleep. After I uninstalled the game, it seems to be fine, coupled with the good cleaning... so until the damn thing decides to not work again... I am going to assume it is OK.

For what it is worth I also discovered that it seems things are now leaning toward PCI. I went to Best Buy to look at an AGP card and they didn't have any in stock.

Glad you finally got to the bottom of this. I addressed that issue on my 3rd post because i have seen that happen so many times.
They say there are some very poorly written programs out there and i can well imagine just how bad. As bad as some poorly designed hardware we have all seen, lol. And bad enough to put a monitor to sleep!

It's good to know everything is o.k. now. Still a little cleaning never hurts. Also reseating the card might have proved usefull as well.

Glad you sorted it out.

well hello!
i am new to tek tips and i have the same video card and have experienced the same problem.

geforce fx5700ve ddr 256mb agp

i play dark age of camelot and purchased the card a little under a year ago. one day i noticed my monitor light would go yellow and the screen would goto its factory screensaver denoting that it was not receiving a signal.

turning the monitor completely off and then on again seemed to alleviate this situation until one day the monitor would not receive a signal at all, and the light would just go yellow denoting it was idle and awaiting information to display.

to this day it still does this and i have had to resort to using an older video card which will not support the games i play.

could you give me some more information towards how to rectify this problem? it is a huge relief to find that someone else shared my problem.

please help!

Have you tried the video card in another pc whose motherboard is known to be able to handle this video card?

The reason i ask this is because i diagnosed, or at least i think i diagnosed Airpans problem as a program that was installed on his pc. See Airpan's last post above this one where he explains about the program (game) his dad installed.
So it could very well be that you may have to uninstall some game that could be causing you this problem. If you can remember the last game(s) or programs you installed, that might do the job for you.
Uninstalling your current video drivers and downloading and installing the latest NVIDIA drivers might be a good idea as well.
Also, you didnt mention details of your pc, your os, service packs, etc, so you need to give us that info.

windows xp sp2
athlon xp 3000+
1gig ram

i guess i'll just go through uninstalling stuff.
heh.

If possible, try that as well.

well i got the card working, but once placed under any sort of stress (playing a game with high video requirements) the monitor goes idle again.

sigh.

Sorry to repeat myself but these are items you have to consider and attend to in order to try and get this vid card working properly.

i have done all of that as well as the chipset drivers.
those were the first steps taken.

I found out (unfortunately after I did a lot of running around) that my father had downloaded a game and for whatever reason, my video card did not like it at all.

Games often come with the latest video drivers for Windows but also for popular open source drivers. The game your dad installed probably replaced the video driver with a newer version that your hardware doesn't support. Or if it was an older game, replaced a new driver with an old one. Either way, just reinstalling your video drivers should remedy the problem.

crambler, sorry, but i didnt know that.
The only other thing i can think of would be to check computer management for error messages.
