Monitoring MySQL with WhatsUp Gold

I want to monitor and verify that MySQL is still alive and healthy.

We have WhatsUp Gold (

http://www.ipswitch.com/products/whatsup/).

WhatsUp Gold (WUG) can be configured to monitor any TCP port by doing a TCP 3-way handshake. I know MySQL is listening on port 3306.

I am wondering is this a sufficient test of a MySQL instance that it answer a TCP SYN with a SYN-ACK?

Anybody else using WhatsUp Gold another way?

That would indicate info about the server itself. Not about any of the databases inside the server. I would consider something that actually queries the db, either dual or some other inconsequentail table or field for a more accurate status
