I just purchased some 280R SUN workstatons and am in need of a good rack mounted monitor/keyboard. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks

Achem... The Sun Fire 280R is a server, not a workstation. It does not actually need a monitor, let alone a graphics card. The proper way to manage these machines is through a serial console, over the serial port. You can then get a serial console server box, to which you can remotely connect for console access to all the machines. (or just use a terminal and/or laptop as needed)

Wow octorian... Why so belligerent. You opinion of the "proper way" may be true for you environment but all the man asked for was a rack mounted monitor and keyboard. Not advice on the "proper way" of connecting a monitor to a to his Sun Fire 280R workstation... OOPS SERVER!!!

Thanks bfitz, I will look into it.

octorian, I know its a server, but it is a server that is running a web application we use and sometimes I have the need to run it directly from the server. It would not work through the serial port and is the reason I need the graphics card and monitor.

I guess you could blame it on Rich Teer's attitude, from comp.sys.sun.* as rubbing off on me ;) (though I still take him with a bit of a grain of salt)

lynx, to my knowledge, is a text browser, the web app we run is a java app that has graphical representations.

I know lynx is not a solution...

I've got a few servers that occasionally require a GUI for application admin tasks. I still use a standard serial console though. For any windowing needs, I just use Exceed. A few of reasons for this:
1. Monitors/keyboards take up very expensive rack space.
2. A video card per system can get expensive.
3. Standardize, standardize, standardize.

I use a Digi CM 32 to manage most of my servers. It's easy to setup, secure, will allow remote connectivity in the event of a system crash/panic, and I can hook it up to my Solaris, AIX, Linux, and DEC systems.

Just my 2 cents.

I have ordered the KVM listed above (2 inches of rack space)
The video cards are ~250.00

I think that is the best solution for my cause :)

Yes, as I said, there really is no need for local graphics on a server. That's what remote-X is for, as you mentioned with Exceed. This isn't the Windows world, and we can run our graphical applications (note that I said "apps", not "entire desktops", though that is also possible) remotely, over the network, and it is not some fancy new feature.
