I upgraded my CPU to a XP 2500+ from a XP 2000+ and now the monitor doesn't get any signal..

The MOBO is a MSI KT4V upgradable to a 2800+ I am running 786 mb 333 ddr ram,80 gig 8mb buffer HDD,Geforce4 4600 Videocard,SB Live soundcard,400W Power supply..

The fans come on,i have tested the Video card in my other PC and it works fine,Also tested the new CPU and works fine in another PC..I am left thinking i messed up the Motherboard when i installed the CPU "either when i took the other one off,or put the new one on"

Any input guys? or anything i can check?

Thanks
Steve

Have you re-inserted the old cpu onto the board? Does it still work? If so, have you looked at bios updates for the MB to see if this problem has been addressed?

Cheers

Thx for all comments and advice given ;)

Yes i checked to see if the old CPU would work on the board, but it does not..That's why i keep thinking i hurt the board somehow..It worked perfect till i decided to upgrade...

Thanks
Steve

How do i D/L and update the Bios if the PC won't even startup? also it won't work with the old CPU "xp2000+" in it anymore..

Thanks
Steve

First get the computer running with the old processor. Go back to what you had and get it working before you try anything new. Try clearing the CMOS and make sure any switches and jumpers are set the way the manual says. When you get it working (or not) you will be at a point you can restart the upgrade.

Are you sure you are installing the CPU correctly - orientation??

This is not re-assuring but I've had similar situations. Once the motherboard was fried (static discharge) I was not properly grounded when monkeying around inside the pc. Had to replace the MB. However the second time (similar problem, you'd think I'd have learned) the pc was dead...left it unplugged for several hours, removed all cards except essential, re-hooked power and volia! It booted! Probably more lucky than smart but try if all else fails.

Cheers

After clearing the cmos, without success? go to a bare setup, pull everything off the mainboard apart from memory, graphics card CPU/fan and main power socket(that means all front panel wires and IDE cables as well as additional cards)
This way you take the possible culprit down to 4 things:
PSU
Memory
Graphics card
CPU
I would question correct orientation of the heatsink and possible overheat damage caused by non or partial heat transfer (only takes 5-10secs)
Did at any time you smell burning?
I hope this isn't the case and the cause is something simple and non terminal, fingers crossed.
Martin

Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

I have reset the Cmos with no luck..
The memory, video card, and CPU all worked in my other PC when i tested them yesterday..

And yes i have the CPU installed correctly, the step in the heatsink is going toward the step in the CPU socket..

The computer will not run with the old CPU anymore, that's what leads me to believe it's the MB..I have unplugged everything from it beside the Video card,RAM,and CPU and it won't work..still get the no signal on the screen..

Honestly i think i fried the MB,first i might not of grounded myself good enough before messing with it,and second i played hell getting the CPU heatsink off the socket the first time,i put my finger behind the board there so i wouldn't crack it or anything, just it took more force then i felt comfortable pushing on it to get it to release the lock..

The MB is the only piece i can't check, the rest i have already verified they work on this PC i'm on now..I even replaced the Power supply with a spare 400W one i have with no luck..

I have had the broke PC unplugged for a few hours now, just for the heck of it i'm about to retry it,who knows..lol..

Does it seem i have covered everything??

Thanks
Steve

Replaced the Motherboard today and it fixed the problem..

Thanks for all the help..now for another post with new questions..lol

Thanks alot guys
Steve

Aye those Heatsinks are an absolute main sometimes. I still fail to see why the motherboars and heatsink manufacturers can't come up with a simple screw-on design.
