Module Question - NM-2FE2W vs. NM-16ESW 2

I have a module question - Hoping that someone knows a little about the differences:

I have cisco 3640's that I'd like to use to separate subnets. I currently use dual FastEthernet module NM-2FE2W:

NM-2FE2W 2 10/100 Ethernet 2 WAN Card Slot Network Module

They work great - the problem is that with a 3640 I only have 4 slots for linecards. They will all get quickly used up! Can I use the EtherSwitch module in the 3640 to extend the number of potential subnets I can get out of the router? The module I'm talking about is NM-16ESW:

I hope so, but my intuition says no. Specifically what I'd like to do it be able to work with each port of the above module just like it is a fastEthernet port - bind an IP for clients to use as a gateway, use ACLs on it, bandwidth control, etc.

Has anyone run into this before or has any advice?

Thanks in advance,

Hutch

Here is the main 3600 series line card page:

No you cannot use that ethernet module like you want.. the best bet would be to get the NM-2FE2W and do sub interfaces possibly on the ethernet ports.

You could use the NM-4E instead (providing 10mb is enough). Upto 3 NM-4E's could be installed, giving you a max of 12 L3 ethernet ports plus one slot left for WAN ports.

The switching module mentioned is L2 only.

Incidently if you looking to do multiple VLAN's with separate acl's, bandwidth control etc on each then you might want to look into setting up a linux box with lots of ethernet interfaces. This would involve more work though ;)

Thanks BuckWeet and sharkyj72-

I was afraid of that and I did read that it was just L2 switching :(

Unfortunately 10mb isn't enough in our setup, but I'm sure Cisco makes FastEthernet sub modules...(?).

Ultimately I should use Cisco 3660 so I have more slots available or even go to a PIX solution.

Thanks,

Hutch

Hi

I just noticed this in passing and thought you should know we sell the etherswitch modules, and always, always have a post-sales issue with them. Beware the IOS revision, and the dead on arrival module!!!
