If I remember correctly, Modular Messaging R2.X does not yet support Microsoft Exchange as a message store, only the MSS. So yes, the MAS and MSS you received are the suported servers for R2.X.
MM w/the MSS does have an Outlook add-in that allows your subscribers to access their v-mail from w/in Outlook.
