MODEM TRYING TO CONNECT 1

The last couple of days I have noticed that my modem is reconnecting by itself. I will shut it down and about 10 minutes later the modem is back on-line. No browser is open either. I then have to shut it down again. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? It has happened twice in the last two days. Is there a virus I should be looking for? Thanks for your time.
O/S Win98se, ISP is dial-up.

There are automatic dialers that can be added to you system by certain scripts.

Get either or both Spybot and Adaware to find and remove these
