HI...

I have reformated and reinstalled WIN 98 SE on a old P3 machine everything seems to be working properly except the modem. I reinstalled the proper drivers and it still doesn't work.... Any ideas ??

Thx

Rey

What kind of modem is it? Does it showup in the device manager as an Unknown PCI Communications Device?

There may be an IRQ conflict with the modem in Device Manager.
If so, then sometimes this can be resolved by simply inserting the modem in a different slot.
If that does not work, then see if you can manually select a different IRQ in DM.
If no other IRQ's are free, then if the computer has serial ports and they are not being used, then disable them in BIOS. This will free up IRQ's 3 and 4, which can then be used by the modem. If there are 2 ser. ports and one is being used, then disable the other one in BIOS.

Change the PCI slot you're using. Then delete the connection, and recreate it. Worked for me.

Enable the COM ports in the BIOS

Actually, enabling the COM ports in BIOS may cause IRQ problems with a modem, since the ports use the same IRQ's(3 & 4) that a modem also likes to use.

That's what the IRQ holder and sterering is for...no?
My PCI modem won't work without the COM port enabled

Hmmm....
I once had the exact opposite problem.
The modem would not work unless one of the COM ports was disabled, which freed up IRQ 3 or 4 for the modem to use.

Just to be humble, I must admit this particular setup maybe a bit screwy....yet works great..and don't quite understand every aspect just yet....
And we know the ways of windoze..[nosmiley]

here's a quick pic of the holder and steering...
[Conflicts/Sharing]

IRQ 9 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host

IRQ 9 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering

IRQ 11 Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64D
IRQ 11 NVIDIA RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro

IRQ 14 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
IRQ 15 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

But if I disable my COM ports.....no go

Maybe this is quite odd[surprise]
and maybe I'll learn sumt'in[bigsmile]

I also noticed my modem resides in memory...(didn't want to make this post too big)

"And we know the ways of windoze.."
I hear you.

I use a cable ISP now, but during dialup days my modem would want to use an IRQ which could not be shared if I let Windows assign resources thru 'Plug n Pray'.
And no luck inserting it in different slots either.
The only way to get it working was to disable a COM port in BIOS, and then manually assign IRQ 3 or 4.
I suppose it mostly depends on the make and model of the modem.
It seems like modems and sound cards are the quirkiest devices to properly configure in DM.

'Plug n Pray'.
you ain't kiddin'!

Here's a couple of my own System quirks..First of all it's a Winmodem..Secondly, I'm using an NT driver for it that I'm really not supposed to be(yet it's on the System Restore Cd's)(2 SysRestCd's and 1 OEM 98 came with sys)..The USR 3com PCI Voice/Dat/Fax was installed in factory, but I think it's only meant for LAN and there was no WinNT OS bundled....only OEM 98...
I guess they considered it an Upgrade...HALFWAY..huh?[bigsmile]

Plus....I have the PCI bus settings in Device Mangler/System props set to use "Hardware" not BIOS to startup.
Also BIOS is set to "Yes"...Plug n Pray OS......

I never quite understood why a lot of major manu. manuals tell you to leave that PnP in BIOS set to "Off"..
The OS (win98) can do a much better job with PnP.than a 495k or so Bios Rom chip can...

ACPI may have sumtin' to do with it....[shades]

What's your opinion/experience.?

ohhhh Windozzzzzz....i'm gettin sleepy already[3eyes]
