working on a Gateway Astro with dual boot win98 & winxp with an internal/onboard motorola SM56 modem. I am getting a error popup that say 'incompatible modem codec detected please check your modem card' I close the message and I see the modem in device manager when I do a diagnostic it says 'port already open' it doesnt matter what operating system I'm in I have updated the drivers but still no luck, is the modem bad?or is there something I'm missing here?

Possibly not. Modems tend to use the Serial port, even if the modem is internal.

Ensure that you have no other applications (such as Palm Desktop) using the serial port, and try again - modems are still legacy devices and they suffer legacy problems such as the above.

If this fails, start your computer in WinXP safe mode and try again, if you find that it works, it is almost certainly an application which is to blame.

Of course you have concerns with IRQ and I/O however, with WinXP at least, these will be autoconfigured and very rarely cause any problems.

Just to recap, every time I have had a problem with the modem similar to yours, it has been down to an application hogging the serial port.

(does anybody remember those halcyon days when your serial mouse stopped working whenever you used your modem?)

Best of luck

check for a dialer (i think spybot recognizes them).
its a soft modem, so there really might be a wrong codec loaded (softmodems are not much more than a dsp and a piece of software/codecs).
uninstall the modem in device manager and then get the latest driver for it.

Also check your BIOS setting about the onboard Modem... it should be set to AUTO or ON when it is installed...

go to control panel and check to see what COM port it uses and set it appropiately...

Had a SM that worked under Win98 but did not work under WinXP (Dual boot same mobo)...

also make sure that if you have onboard Sound that 1.) if it is CHIP controlled that the modem is set to PRIMARY or 2.) if onboard sound is AC97 (Audio Codec) that the modem is set to SECONDARY... (could be reversed, I am not to sure anymore been quite a few years since I used a SoftModem)...
