I have a USR 56K Voice Pro PNP external modem.

It keeps "disappearing" from Device Manager on bootup.

I continually have to go to the Device Manager and do a "Scan for Hardware Changes" and then it "reappears".

I have an ASUS P4PE mobo.

Any help with this appreciated!

can you find this modem model in w2k hcl?
do you use correct driver , that is for w2k and are digitally signed?

Sorry to say, but I had the same problem. (Fix - use an internal modem.)
The only way I could get round it was to make sure the modem was turned on BEFORE powering up the PC. Unfortunately, if your PC has any sort of power-saving mode in use, you may find it loses the settings even with power management kicking in.

It's a pain in the rear, but at least it doesn't need re-installing each time, only a redetect.

Incidentally, I experience the same sort of problem with my 3COM NIC if I turn my PC on without the network hub switched on - again, a redetect cures it.

Thanks so much. I have an external modem and I do believe that "powering on" before booting my PC will do the trick!
