Hi all,
This one's had me up till 5.00am trying to work it out, I recently built a cheap system out of old parts for a friend who just wanted to use the internet, the processor is only a 150Mhz with 32Meg memory and a 20Gig H/D,the modem is an Ambiant Intel HaM 56K V.90 Flex which works fine in other systems but not this one,it connects transfers and gives a rate of 49,333bps. I've tried pinging server-OK,manual IP config, reducing buffer sizes, increasing cache size, clear all files and temps. If also tried an Ethernet card connected through mine and that worked fine..is it possible that the modem is faulty even though it connects OK?....I've been building PC's for years and I don't want to be beaten like this..someone please help!! is there a solution? have I missed something? or should I just go out and buy a new modem? will the same happen again if I do?.....Stressed!!!

Try a different modem, if that doesn't work try reloading the OS over the top. Very likely that the winsock is corrupt. If you had AOL on here at one point, the AOL VPN crap that is loaded may be causing the problem. You can try killing the TCP/IP stack and rebuilding that.

Hope this helps, WMH
