mobo swap with win xp

Would like to change my motherboard without doing a reinstal the new board has a differrent chipset ie Via to Sis.

Sounds like a lot of bother! But should work I guess?

Personally I would do the backup as suggested. then I would use the export settings wizard and save the result. Then using a fresh HDD I would build the new PC, setup windows, install all apps and then import my old settings by adding the old HDD as a slave (which is where I would have saved the output from the settings transfer wizard).

After a while any system gets clogged up with old rubbish. A new system/mobo/boot drive is a great opportunity to have a tidy up. You only re-install the software you actually still use. You also get the chance to learn from your old mistakes and set the new PC up in a way better suited to the way you prefer to work.

Having said that - I have always taken the view that once you need a new mobo - the rest of system needs replacing anyway. So I build a brand new PC and network them to get stuff across. The old system I use as a reserve and a backup system as long as it lives. Nothing worse than going to all that trouble and have the PSU or the video card die a month later!

Besides the Website you mentioned, there are two ways to accomplish this:

1.) you do a Repair Install... This may or may not work correctly...

or

2.)
a. Copy the following files from your XP CD to the %Windir%\System32 Folder:

b. Copy the Following into NotePad and save it out as MERGEIDE.REG:

Wow BadBigBen that post is most impressive and I have no doubt it would work.
It might be a bit beond my tech skills I have printed your post and I intend trying it on a couple of older boards.
The only reason I'm trying to save this instal is because it is a fresh one from a OEM xp disk and I may not be able to activate another instal with a mobo change.

Even if you don't reinstall, an OEM copy of Windows will detect that the mobo has been changed and almost certainly ask you to re-activate, then almost certainly tell you that the changes are too major to accept.

I run an OEM copy (and regret it) and have gradually added/changed hardware over the years. A while back Windows asked me to re-activate because I had made one change too many, but I was lucky because the many changes had been sufficiently minor and it re-activated successfully. A motherboard change is unlikely to be accepted though.

i'm not sure the oem faq is correct in the way that it says, it will wipe out everything and not upgrade. i had win98se on my machine. i purchased oem xp-pro cd with a new hdd. when i tried to install xp, it recognized that there is 98se running on the machine. and proceeded to upgrade it. it just depends on what option you choose on the install.

it will require you to reactivate because of the hardware change, but when you call Microsoft and give them a really long number they will give you the new license code you need, just explain you changed the MOBO and it is only going to run on that machine.

ok the motherboard change went well reinstaled drivers system running stable no probs with windows.
Got a windows update which required a restart.
Restarted, windows detected hardware changes and prompted me to reactivate of which I did by phone, stated that my new board was replacement for a faulty one.
I think in hindsight a clean instal is the best option but least now my computer profile has changed so future instals shouldn't be a problem
