hi!
I use networker software compression on many of our clients.
it is really good in many ways.
+ The primary backup volume is on disk.. it can therefor contain more data when it is compressed.
+ The restore time is reduced very much in some cases.
+ Less data transfered on the network

Then the "problem".. when using mminfo to show the saveset size it is printing the compressed size..
For example I have unix system with 750 GB data,,
after backup mminfo and report sumsize gives me around 200 GB.

No big problem but it is there a way to see the acutual size before compressing?

Second question.. is there any disadvantage with compressed backup, except more cpu resources on the backuped client?

Kind regards

To my knowledge, there is no way to see the uncompressed amount of data, except you compare that. This is obvious, because the save set size is only counted at the storage node who does not receive any uncompressed data at all.

Well, if your drives are also compressing data, i though compressing again with software was not recomended, except for better utilizing WAN and in some cases Network, may be unix is more efficiant, but in my case i use no compreson on any of my 120 windows client only HW compreson on the drives, you should upgrade or experiment with GB Jumbo Frames to better utilize your network and\or upgrade network where possible.

thank you..

yes jumbo frames is very intressting..
if i have 100 clients.. if I change the jumbo frame setting on the backup server, does I need to change the settings on every nic on the clients, or does it auto negotiate the frame size?

Whatever it needs - but it works independently from the NetWorker environment.

If you need to know uncompressed backup size, you will have to use "nsrinfo" command and summary file sizes. I used this command (in Windows) :
nsrinfo -s server -v -t "27-JAN-2005 21:00:49" "-xc|" client | find "WIN ASDF" | find /v "\|" | find /v "/|" > file.txt
and next I imported file.txt into Excel like text file with delimiter char "|".
