mmc.exe appears multiple times in task manager

I use various MS products throughout the day. I have just closed all applications, but my task manager shows 2 incidences of mmc.exe running. If I try and shutdown it says that processes still running, must shut down blah blah. I have noticed that these mmc.exe are causing apps such as outlook and MS Business Solutions Great Plains to crash or hang ie if I notice the app is hung, I go into task manager and end the mmc.exe tasks and the app starts responding again.

Why are the mmc.exe not being removed properly?

Is your Great Plains, etc. through an MSDN license?

No. Great Plains licesing is handled by concurrent users only (ie you can have 1000 installs, but only 25 can access the data) and our Office is via volume licensing.

There is no reason for mmc to be running even in one instance.

I'm not sure what you mean by the logon script? I'm simply opening and closing applications and the mmc.exe is showing. I do use SQL Enterprise Manager, but that app is closed as well.

I just ran around and checked: note once machine (stand-alone, Domain or Workgroup) has an instance of mmc.exe running.

I run the adaware program every 2 days and virus definitions daily. I'm not sure why an adware would launch mmc.exe?

AdAware would not launch mmc.exe.

My point was that there is no reason to have mmc.exe running, not even once.
