MKSYSB DVD does it take this long ?

It looks like you want to investigate the -e flag. 4 DVDs means > 12Gb of data. Most of my systems only have 9Gb total for rootvg and, even then, we never use all of it.
Try to look at which filesystems can be dropped from the mksysb and backed up in other ways.
