Is there any problems associated with mixing norstar lines into unused pairs of ethernet cabling? (cat 5, 4 pair)

Standard 10BT uses only the orange and green pairs; leaving 2 twisted pairs for?

What is the standard practice? Distance/cross-over concerns?

Thanks

Standard practice is to run a new cable.
Once you put another circuit on your Ethernet cable it no longer passes certification. You may be running at 10BT, but 100BT would be more common.

However, if your not worried about standards, or the mess of the equipment area that such an operation can make, you can get away with it.

You can run 10BT and 100BT with 2 pair but only at half duplex. Having all 4 pairs allows for full duplex as well as gigabit ethernet.

Jeff,

Only 1000bT and 100bT4 use all eight legs, 100bTx uses two pair as does 10bT.

to add to what Arr said ...
half duplex, full duplex depend on the switch/NIC negotiations
If the wiring is incorrect/ insufficinet it will NOT work

Done it also, Works good, lasts long time,
Run Norstar on pr 1 ethernet on 2,3 and dial up on 4.
It's "not standard" as can be. But hey it was a four story multi million dollar home. I'm not cutting holes in it.

full duplex 100 base T does require the proper switching equipment but most new switches are full duplex. But it does use all four pair(2 for send, 2 for receive)

Jeff

Just restating what Senks and Arr said:
The duplex settings do not effect which or how many pairs are used.
100BT uses 2 pairs (4 conductors) regardless of full or half duplex.

If you have a source that states otherwise please provide a link so that we can view/ discuss it.
