Is there a mission statement for this forum?

I know that it's genesis was the puzzles posed on the SQL Server forum, but are there limitations as to languages/technologies used in posing puzzles?

And, what are the consequences for people posing non-puzzles -- questions that rightfully belong in a different forum? I mean besides the usual high-voltage electric shocks, that is.

Just wanted to find this info out before I advertised it's existence to the other programming forums.

I think the rule should be that you name the language\technology in the title. Just like in the other forums if you see something that belongs in the regular forums then tell the person and red flag it.

Since he didn;t make a SQL Server Specific one, I would suppose any language/technology would be appropriate.

My $.02. You pass text below thru grammar checker [smile]

1. We do puzzles here.

2. (taken from Merriam-Webster dictionary) Puzzle = to offer or represent to (as a person) a problem difficult to solve or a situation difficult to resolve : challenge mentally;. Translation: food for brains.

3. We are programmers, right? It would be nice (albeit not mandatory) that puzzle has some practical (aka: "real life") value.

4. There are no lang/tech limitations for posting individual puzzles.
4a) If puzzle is explicitely described/written for language X, don't do it in language Y

5. We do algorithms too.

6. We don't to "Plz help!" or "How to..." stuff here. Violations of this rule will result in following countermeasures:

- 1st: usual high-voltage electric shocks
- 2nd: unusual high-voltage electric shocks
- 3rd: Spanish inquisition
- 4th: chit-chat with chrissie1 :p

Comments?

------
Theory: everybody knows everything, nothing works
Practice: everything works, nobody knows why

[banghead]

That sounds reasonable to me.

Here's what I posted in the C# forum.

==============================================

A new forum has been created called Puzzles For Programmers ( forum1551 )

The ([sub]preliminary, non-exclusive, subject to expansion and/or alteration, may be void in your region[/sub]) rules for the forum are:

1. Should pose a puzzle that requires some programming effort. Algorithms are welcome too.

2. The puzzles should have some applicability to a real-world problem.

3. The original poster should include any time, language or technology restrictions in the subject line or body of the post. Otherwise the responders are free to improvise.

4. No questions are allowed that rightfully belong in a more appropriate forum. So, any posts that are of a "Please help" or "How do I..." nature will be red-flagged for removal. The usual Tek-Tips posting rules also apply.

5. The overall purpose is to provide brain-food to the community, and to learn by participating with others in solving problems.

Enjoy!
Chip H.

How come this thread is before mine, I'm sure I was the first to post here.

And I copied chiph's message to the vb.net forum.

Yeah there will be puzzles that have to be language dependant, but it'll be better if we can keep the majority of puzzles language independant so that anyone can take part in them if they want.

I've just posted chip's response in the ASP.NET forum as well with a link back to this thread.
