After recently re-formatting my hard drive & re-installing Windows 98 SE, I get the following error message when I run Norton Win Doctor:
Missing Windows Start Up File
"The Run section of your Windows Registry is missing one or more required files for Windows."
The details are as follows:
"The key,"SOFTWARE/Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run" refers to a Registry value "EnsonigMixer" that points to "starter.exe", an invalid startup command."
Norton then deletes the invalid key, but the problem appears every time that I boot up. Otherwise everything is working great.
Would someone be so kind as to inform me how to fix this problem once and for all.
Thanks

Do you have the file Starter.exe in the \WINDOWS folder?
this is to start the Mixer application for the Creative SoundBlaster.
Right click My Computer > Properties > Device Manager > "view devices by type" > expand Sound Video and Game Controllers
- do you see
"Creative SoundBlaster Audio PCI 64D" listed (or similar) - AND "SB AudioPCI 64D Legacy Device"?

Is this a Major manu OEM PC? w/Onboard Sound?

Hi,
It's a Dell desktop, and I did find both Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64V as well as Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64V Legacy Device in my Device Manager.
I did a search, and could not find a starter.exe file anywhere
What would be my next step?
Thanks for taking the time to respond.

hi;
your welcome
If you have the original Dell CDs - it's on there somewhere under 98\Audio\1373 or 98\Audio\1371 (or similar).

For the Time being - you can Start > Run MSCONFIG and in Startup Tab - untick the Starter.exe entry
Reboot and all errors should stop for now.

Start > Run SYSEDIT (similar/older to msconfig)
Copy and Paste the Autoexec.bat file contents here.

Also - Open an MS-DOS Prompt Box (Start > Run COMMAND) or Start > Programs > Ms-dos prompt
Type in SET
Copy and Paste the contents here.

we'll go more into exact config settings when you post back
