A user came to me and said he could not open a file in excel
cause the open dialogue box could not show. I clicked the open file icon, NOTHING happened (i was expecting the open dialogue, so i could select the required file). I tried using the file menu thru to open. NOTHING happened. I uninstalled Office 97 and installed it again. NOTHING CHANGED. I uninstalled office 97 and installed office 2000. NOTHING CHANGED.

I am Using windows 98.

Any reponse will be appreciated.

i'd try using the keyboard shortcut ctrl-o and if that fails, try checking for a virus.

gee001,

Check to see if someone has not changed the properties of the ctrl+o shortcut key combination or disabled the action altogether.

Try using the information contained in and the utility accessible from the links below to completely remove references to your applicable Office Suite:

Ensure that your virus protection is up to date. Perform any disk cleanup/maintenance activities (delete temporary files, scandisk and defrag) necessary. Then, reinstall the suite and see if the menu items return.

Does this happen with all files, i.e. you open up Excel with no files open, then go to the File menu and open is unavailable? or is it just for this one file?

Hope this helps.
