missing o/s

I'm trying to fix up an old computer (486). I thought I would add another HDD as a slave (only 1 IDE). Each HDD is under 0.5g and autodetect worked OK. When I ried to boot up it couldn't find an operating system. There is win95 on the master and ms dos on the slave. I removed the slave and reset the configs. but still no o/s.
I booted using a floppy and was told of an error which may be cured using fdisk. I duly ran fdisk and followed instructons to partition the HDD. Still no o/s.

What have I done and can I fix it?

Well, if you used fdisk, I'd say the OS is gone. I'm curious what error you got using the boot floppy, and what exactly you did in fdisk.

My best suggestion is to partition the whole 500meg on your master to put W95 on it (not a whole lot of breathing room here), and then add the slave once Windows is up and running.

You may have crossed FAT types. Go with a FAT 16 on both, either one at a time or both on at the same time. fdisk both, format both then load 95. And what version are you planning to install, and what media?
