Hi
A housemate with a win98 machine networked to my xp machine has deleted his msdos.sys file and asked me to fix it for him! Web design - I'm fine, msdos - I'm a dunce!
He has no startup disc and no system backups,but we have the win98 cd. Any tips as to where I start getting his machine fired up again would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Lole

Hi,

You can get a startup disk from
You can try copying someone elses msdos.sys file onto that computer.

YOu can also re-install windows over top of itself. Windows 98 is stable enough to do that. If you want to re-install Windows over top of itself (dirty re-install) follow these instructions: FAQ748-1599

Hope this helps! NATE

You can copy it from another machine to a floppy. but it is a SHR file that you normally don't see.

start , programs, msdos
cd ..
attrib -s -h -r msdos.sys
copy msdos.sys a: /v
attrib +s +h +r msdos.sys
exit

and on the machine that needs it
boot from floppy EBD then insert the floppy with msdos.sys
copy msdos.sys c: /v
reboot and go Ed Fair

This is more of a question than anything, for Spider or Ed. for my own knowledge.. Wouldn't sys. file checker install Msdos.sys straight from his install cd? He did say they had one. This is mainly for self interest but it may work for Lole. I have used it to install other things and is a lot less complicated than the ext. program that comes with win98. Hope one or both Ed/Spider or anyone else will inform me if it will work..." avid reader of this forum" Jackha

I corrupted one of my 98SE systems to check. That isn't one of the files that sfc will restore.
Glad you asked as it forced me to look into a system that I mostly ignore since it works so well. (except for intermittent shutdown problems) Ed Fair

Thanks for answering my question Ed I didn't have the balls to try it myself, " never would have gotten it back " thanks again...jackha

Speaking of sfc, wouldn't SYS.COM do it also if they are able to boot from CD? Or would they also have to delete io.sys to provide adaquate room in the boot sect?

I'm now curious after reading the above.

Ok, I know that this is for win 9x (which I have at work) but, I just had to check out my home pc (WinME):

[tt];FORMAT
[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

[Options]
BootMulti=1
BootGUI=1
AutoScan=1
WinVer=4.90.3000
;
;The following lines are required for compatibility with other programs.
;Do not remove them (MSDOS.SYS needs to be >1024 bytes).

That's all there is in it. So, again, shouldn't "SYS C:" be able to work?

msdos.sys on an EBD is a one liner:
w98ebd

I have a new install of SE I'll try it on, but it isn't looking good. Ed Fair

sys from EBD creates a oneliner on c:
;sys

Ed I just had to try this the more I thought about it, went to find>msdos in C "found 2 one in C and one in C/windows wonder how Loles friend deleted both" oh well. Maybe I'm only suppposed to have 1, Put my install cd in..Changed find to look in E " my burner letter" showed 3 picked the largest "2KBs" >file>open containing folder> right clicked and had COPY listed so opened win. expl. to see if it would let me past it to C, the paste option was there so I'm sure it would have let me past it but I didn't try because I've changed mine and I didn't want to have to change it again..Lole if your reading this Ed could probably explain it better that I, if you want to try it, I still haven't figured out how to past things from my screen onto a message yet.. This is fun, makes me try things that I normally wouldn't do just because if I can still get back on line someone here will know how to fix it if I screw it up...jackha

More fun if you screw it up without having any help recovering. I do all my installs from the hard drive because I have to do reinstalls regularly for various and sundry reasons. And my install stuff is copied over a network in DOS with only the setup and cabs directory except occasionally I copy the same files from the CD if I haven't got the network up yet on the particular machine.

My 98SEs only have one copy and there isn't a source file on the CD that I can find. Ed Fair

Hey Ed, you're right I put my SE disk in and all it shows under FIND is oldmsdos but my 98 disk has it, guess it's not used in SE. jackha
