Hi,

For some reason on one of our machines it is missing the My Computer, IE, Network Places, My Docs icon, on the desktop and in the start menu. For some reason though, they work in the task bar, when you open up IE for instance. Any ideas on how to fix this?

-CJ

And if you right-click the desktop, Properties, Desktop tab, Customize Desktop, and checkmark each of the icons that are missing, do they now reappear?

No they dont. I should be more clear. They have the little windows symbol on them is the icon that I am seeing on the desktop and start menu.

1. Rebuild the icon cache:

Right-click Desktop, choose Properties, Appearance Tab.
Click Advanced button, choose Icon from the drop-down list
Set it's size to 31 and press OK, OK
Repeat the steps (1-3) and set the Icon size to 32 (defaults)

2. Check icon settings:

Go to a working computer.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT. Navigate to the following Registry brach:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID

The Desktop Icons are located in the sub keys as follows:

My Network Places: {208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}
My Computer: {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
My Documents: {450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}
Recycle Bin:{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
Default IE Icon: {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}

In any case, right-click the CLSID folder, Export. Now copy this (.REG) file to a floppy, USB key or transfer it over the network to the non-working computer. Double click the file and agree to the registry merge. Restart the compuyter and test.

If still no joy:

Run the edit on line 4, left hand panel for Icon View:

Then:
Right click the Desktop/Properties/Themes/Windows XP (Apply/ok)

Then:
Redo the rebuild icon cache step discussed earlier above
.
