Maybe this will save someone else tons of time...

I lost all fonts except one, even saved documents when viewed were in the only available font.

I had loaded a generic/text printer driver to create a file for an export. I just spent the last 3 hours repairing, reinstalling, to no avail..duhh.

Seems that Word looks at your default printer, when considering what your available font list should contain.

Have you tried to re-load word?
Maybe copy the fonts from the install disk into the fonts folder?
Font download from MS?

Just some thoughts!

pancreas,

Sorry for the confusion the problem was that I had loaded
the generic/text printer driver (capturing output to a file)
and made it my default printer.

I did this to export data out of an application.

I fixed the problem by changing my default printer back
to what it was originally and the problem was fixed.

It was very strange in that I still had all my fonts in
Excel just not in Word and the "Fonts" folder still had
all my fonts in it.

Thanks for the reply though.

Seems very buggy to me that Word would limit your available
font list according to your default printer.

Word interrogates the printer driver to enable it to layout a page using the printers parameters: this includes checking to see which fonts the printer is able to use. A generic/text printer or a fax printer won't have this information available, so Word doesn't list fonts other than the system basics.
