Hi, I have two problems. After what might have been a power surge, my Windows XP slowed down considerably. How can I fix that? Also I have a missing file and can't locate it on my Windows CD. Can you tell me how I can get this file put back?

mscoree.dll

My Nortons Utilities said that the following file could not access it:
C:\Program File\Common Files\Installshield\Professional\Runtime\0701\Intel32\DotNet Installer.exe

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.
Check both available boxes.

Information About the .NET W32.Donut Virus

It might not be on the CD if it was installed later with .Net Framework?

Get a copy of some other applicable machine, or Google for it, or re-install .Net Framework.

I guess I didn't understand about the .Net thing. My computer is still running very slow. Also, now I have to log in to get to my desk top. I don't know how that happened, but can anyone tell me how to turn it off? I used to know how on WIN 98. Thanks for all your help. I love ya'll.

Linney,
Sorry to take so long to respond. I don't understand anything about .Net Framework. Does that have anything to do with my Windows XP slowing down, freezing, etc.?

.Net Framework probably has nothing to do with your slowdown other than the link I gave earlier about the ".NET W32.Donut Virus" which can interfere with or cause problems for .Net Framework.

Your slowdown should be tackled with the links I supplied earlier under the heading "Slowness" in my post of 3 Apr 06 0:32.

Have you tried working through those?

Here is something else as you have mentioned freezing for the first time.

To get further information about problems look in your Event viewer. Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

If you are having automatic reboots, check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem.

You can also turn off "automatically restart after an error" so it will just halt at the fault and display the full Stop Error and blue screen.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties .
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery .
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure , and then click OK . The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.

If the problems occurred after installing a device driver or application, try using Safe Mode and removing the driver or program.

To check your RAM.

To check your Hard Drive.

The drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software to check your drive for problems.

You can also load the Recovery Console and run ChkDsk /r to check for problems.

See if you have any services that are flagging as "Starting" but not actually running.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Windows.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try another user in case your profile is corrupt.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
