Windows 98 machine. On startup, a message appears informing of a missing ff.exe file. This doesn't cause any problems in itself but is damn annoying.

Does anyone know what this file is for and how to stop windows asking for it?

Actually, that sounds like malware. Fatal Flooder to be specific. http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/f/fatal_flooder.asp

The manual instructions in the link above may work fine for you, else...

Go to Start > Run > type in msconfig and go to the startup tab. Uncheck any instance of this file.

Then, pull down a copy of SpyBot and run it on your machine, removing red items: http://www.safer-networking.org/
