Hi, a friend has just brought his laptop over as his CD/R drive is no longer showing on the explorer.
I have checked in the hardware device manager and it is showing the yellow exclamation and the error code is 19 saying that the system registry is at fault.
i have searched here and on MS knowledge base and the consensus is to edit two values in the system reg.
This i have done (with restore off) but it still shows the error.
There is no restore point to roll back to either.
I have tried networking to my PC but his laptop will not configure.
Also tried disabling and enabling but no joy
any ideas other than the regedit route or the ones I have tried????

Regards, Phil.

mostlikely the upper and lowerfilters within the Registry have gotten corrupt...

To fix try the following: open the Registry Editor...

START, RUN, type in Regedit... search for the following KEY and delete it:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"

Without the quotes of course...

If you can't delete it, then you might have to give yourself access by right clicking (on the leftside) and set your access rights first...

then exit the RegEdit and go to the 'device manager' and uninstall all CD-ROM's, DVD's, and CD-RW's...
REBOOT and let Windows reinstall the drives...

That's the problem, everywhere I look recommends the regedit fix as posted above, but I have done this but still get the error message.
I deleted both Upper and Lower values with the System restore off and then uninstalled the hardware and then reinstalled but still got the error and when I checked in the registry both the values had returned so i again deleted them both but still no joy.

I will try the other fixes the next time I get my hands on the machine, any other ideas why the values might keep re-appearing and be corrupt?
I heard some CD writing software can cause this erroe and he did download Nero 7 trial but i have removed all traces of that.

The upper and lower filters issue is most commonly linked to Roxio's 'Easy CD Creator'. Is this installed?

He swears not and I can't find it on visual and search inspections.
Only Nero 7

I had a similar situation a few months ago and tried all the usual fixes you've tried, also to no avail.

You mentioned in your first post that, in addition to the missing drive problem, you couldn't network it. This, again, is similar to what I found.

In the end I found that the PC I was working on was infected with several viruses, including Win32.Rbot and rootkit.h.trojan. Cleaning the PC (which took ages due to the level of infection) restored both networking and the missing optical drive. (And here is another account of network problems and disabled CD as the result of malware:
I mention this in case malware is the cause of your problem. I had to use several anti-malware programs to clean up the mess.

Note that there are also reports that trying to remove Sony's XCP copy protection (recently discovered to be a rootkit) can also disable the CDROM. See:
