I'm using an Adaptec 29160 SCSI card with two 40 gig Atlas III Ultra 160 drives. It's my understanding that the 29160 does not off RAID....so I'm interested in my alternative options. Can I just mirror the drives through the NT install? How can I do this? Is that a good reliable way? Also, during the NT installation....when setting up partitions.....I seem to see both hard disks....ID 1 and ID 2. It wants me to create a boot partition...which I believe I'd make on ID 1....however I can only make it 1 gig in size. It's my understanding that I will need to go in to FDISK and partition out a 4 gig peice...then rerun setup. How can I run FDISK....just boot off a 98 boot disk? Any help is much appreciated!!

Are you planning to install NT4 server? If so, you will need to install it first on one drive and then go into disk administrator and mirror the volumes.

Software mirroring in NT is not a good approach. If at all possible, purchase a RAID controller and do it through the hardware.

Why is it a bad approach exactly? (Mirroring drive in NT instead of using a RAID controller).

I have used the software mirroring and it is very slow compared to using a RAID controller, it is something I would never do again.

Just think about it. If the software fails, so does your mirror. It is a pain in the ass to recover NT from a mirror failure. Your machine will blue screen, then you need an emergency disk to boot from.

By using Hardware Raid, you are in control of your mirror, not the OS. It is a much more stable and reliable way to protect your environment.

Yes the hardware Raid is the best way to go but for those who are strapped to a tight budget there are really no other options.

If you are interested in disk mirroring for Windows NT 4.0 you will need to do the following...
1. Install your OS onto the 4 GB partition.
2. Create you second partition on the first logical drive.
3. In disk administrator you have to highlight the c: drive and while holding down the Ctrl key highlight the unformatted second volume (free space) and then choose the "establish mirror" option in the "fault tolerance" menu.
4. You must repeat step 3 for all other partitions you want to mirror.
see microsoft...

The important thing to remember is DO NOT format the second volume or assign drive letters to it - it will mirror the information automatically. Also, you will take a performance hit when you mirror drive information because it must write all information twice.

Hope this helps.
