Hi,
Mandrake tends to throw a lot of stuff in there that you might not need. It is, after all, designed to be easier to use and for the desktop more than anything else (although, from what I understand, is a very good server system as well).
At any rate, I've had to install Mandrake several times before I thought I "got it right" and, since I'm a newbie at Linux, am learning bit-by-bit.
Try doing an "expert" installation, and then manually select the packages that you need. Mandrake, like most distros, will auto-magic-cally build or remove dependencies as needed.
I figure as long as you have a network or other internet connection you can build on what you need from there.
And if you really want a bare bones system to play with, might I recommend something like Gentoo? Takes a long time to build, but the system is bootstrapped to your machine, makes you learn a lot and is quite fun! J.R. Juiliano
