I am seeking a list of the least number of items needed at Start-Up of Windows ME.

If you're looking in msconfig-->startup, then you definitely want to leave scanreg (or System Restore), systray, Load Power Profile, and anything pertaining to your video card and antivirus software...

It's really hard to state a generalized list that "everyone" can go by. Chances are, you're going to have to ultimately discover what each item is referring to and decide whether to keep them enabled. It's usually a little different between laptops and desktops as well.

Thank you for your response. Are there utility software packages that can review the existing configuration on my PC and recommend items that can be deleted from MSCONFIG STARTUP? It seems that the faster the processor that I buy the longer it takes to boot up and shut down. Will there ever be a truly fast PC?

Thanks,

There are tons of third party utilities that could probably help you out, though I doubt they'll come with recommendations on which to disable. Go to and try a search there.

I totally agree with you. It seems the faster the proc gets, the slower the pc runs! LOL Actually, it's all a matter of tweaking, and it appears you're on the right track. Wait until you try XP. In an article I read from last week, the average benchmark on a P4 system proved that the OS alone was able to boot 30-35 seconds faster than Windows 2000 and even 5-10 seconds faster than ME.
