I have a file server that has (2) folders that are eating up the storeage space, so instead of moving all of the other departments off it I want to move the (2) offending departmental folders BUT keep their associated mappings.

How can I do this? Both systems are running W2K server.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

What do you mean "keep their associated mappings"?

By 'mappings' I mean if there are any associated links to programs/utilities/files that they're still able to run properly.

Is this possible or do I pretty much just have to copy the directories & then see what the departments have linked to those folders & fix stuff from there? Seems kinda hokey...

Yeah, you'll have to correct any mappings since they probably now point to \\servername\sharename.

You can avoid this for any future moves if you use Dfs. With Dfs you setup a shared folder on a server and then create links to shares located anywhere on your network. Then, if you have to move a share, you just move it and fix the Dfs link to point to the new location. Your users won't notice any difference that way.

You can also use Dfs to automatically sync multiple file locations (but you don't have to, I use Dfs for both).
