Hi,

We are planning to migrate from NT4 to 2000; not upgrade but a new server2000.

Please can anyone give me a hand, our structure is very simple, 60 users/clients both NT4/2000, just migrate accounts, passwords etc.

I found ADMT.exe on this forum but lack of guide line step by step.

1)do I install first a new 2k server with AD then migrate? in this case how integrate to the existant NT4 PDC/BDC

2)Is it possible to do it gradually; let the user connect though PDC and migrate gradually to the new 2000?

3) How about checking if the applications from NT4 are compatible with 2000

Many thanks for your help.

Ely.

I'm not familiar with ADMT.exe, so I can't help you there.

However, if you plan to install AD on a new box, without upgrading, there is no way to "transfer" user accounts across. You will need to set up a completely new domain, with a new DNS domain name and a new NT4 domain name (you won't be able to use the existing one).

Then you will need to manually create user accounts, and move the clients onto the new domain.

I may be doing something similar soon, assuming I can get the new hardware.

Wouldn't the best thing to do be to install NT4 Server on a system, make it a BDC, take it off the network, promote it to PDC, upgrade it to Win2000, install 2000 on the new server, synchronize the domain with the upgrade server, promote the new server and turn off the old NT server and destroy the installation used to upgrade to 2000 if necessary?
