I need help migrating mailboxes from an exchange 5.5 server to an exchange 2k server across domains. The domain that all of my mailboxes are in now is an NT 4.0 domain running Exchange 5.5 and I want to move them across domains to a WIN2k with AD.
We just went through this and ran into some real problems. Same situation as yours, with Win XP Pro clients.
All I can say is backup like mad, even the client machines. Make a backup of the .pst files at the local level. Don't wipe out your old server until you're absolutely sure everyhing is running smoothly on the new one.
We ran into a problem with the clients not recognizing the new domain. Had to unjoin them all from the domain and then rejoin. This forced us to set up new user profiles and manually migrate/reinstall most user settings like Favorites, network drives, printers etc. The "Copy User Profiles" didn't work because the old NT4 user profiles weren't recognized.
Then some of our Office installations went South and we had to reinstall them.
Also had to run ipconfig /release and /renew on the clients to flush out a DNS problem that was causing the clients to take forever to log in. Took us hours to figure this out.
Your client mailbox rules will all need to be rebuilt.
Users will probably lose their system-remembered web passwords.
Let all your users know you're getting ready to do this. Prepare them in advance.
Budget plenty of time. We're one week in and still dealing with issues. Don't trust anything to go smoothly. All the better if it does. Good luck
