I have a Yamaha Clavinova CVP 207 and would like to be able to transfer midi files from it to my PC and vice-versa.
I have a Midi-to-USB Cable/interface with a driver CD.
After installing the driver, I could select Yamaha USB MIDI input and MIDI Output from the Audio devices.
However, I cannot find any Software that allows me to browse the several Midi melodies stored in the Clavinova.
Alternatively, I would be happy if I could play the notes and see them displayed on the computer screen (Software GUI), or to run a midi file and hear it on my Clavinova.

Anybody has such an experience and could advise?

Thanks in advance

Thank you for the reply.
Actually I tried both already.

This is indeed a very useful link, in terms of the information it provides.
It also mentions Cubase, which is a well known sophisticated sequencer (mentioned to me by the shop keeper from whom I purchased the Clavinova.)

I am hoping to have feedback from somebody who experienced this, because I am not into composing (yet anyhow) but looking for a simple interface that helps transfer MIDI from PC to the digital piano and vice versa.

Thanks for the link.

If the songs are burned into the piano's RAM, then you usually can't transfer them out. See if you can get them on diskette from the mfg. I use Cakewalk, and have the midi out of the keyboard plugged in, so that I can record a track at a time.

I don't think you can see what you are playing, but you can print out the sheet music afterwards, and combime tracks to print out.

You can also find MIDI songs on the Internet.

Actually the midi provided with Clavinova is protected, but that's not what I wanted to copy.
I wanted to be able to transfer midi files that I produce myself by playing on the Clavinova and recording what I play.
As for midi songs, I have indeed downloaded some midi from Yamaha and other sources, but would like to transfer them by USB rather than by diskette, if possible, otherwise what's the use of having the midi-usn connection if I can do nothing with it.
You mentioned Cakewalk, so I will check it out, if there is a version for PC and if it does what I need.
I also heard of Cubase but it's a little expensive for what I need.
Thank you for your feedback.

you can get a midi interface card for your pc, and attach the clavinova to your pc , then install a sequencer like cakewalk , get the instrument definition file for your clavinova ( if it's available ), and just hit the record button on your sequencer. With some quantizing, you'll get a pretty nice midi file

rgds,

R.

Of course the Clavinova instrument definition is available. It will either be General Midi (GM), or in the better clavinovas, XG (Yamaha's "Extended General Midi").

I use CakeWalk as well, with a whole bunch of MIDI gear. If you're going to do it "right", get used to playing along with a click track. :)

Just for fun, here's my gear list:
Yamaha MU-90R Synthesizer (XG)
Alesis QS-8
Yamaha SPX-90II (for effects)
Digitech Guitar Processor GSP-5
Digitech Vocalist Harmonizer
... and a 4-port USB to midi interface.

Want to hear it all in action? Check out
:)

Anyone interested in sharing sequences, give me a shout too.

Why is it so hard to solve such a simple issue?

Sorry guys but I still can't seem to find what I'm looking for.
CakeWalk? Well there is more than one product and what they say about it so far as I could see has nothing to do with transfering MIDI files between PC and Digital Keyboard/Piano.
Anybody can favor me a concrete link where I can download this software? I seem to be too stupid for these things, sorry.

PS. Of course, I already have the MIDI-USB interface connected. Donno why the CD that comes with it don't provide the necessary software.
Donno even why the Clavinova itself don't come with such a Software, if we are paying already several thousand $$$$$.
I also don't understand why I cannot find such a software to download from Yamahamusicsof.com

One thing you gotta know : in the music business, NOTHING's for free...so don't expect to get any software for free.

rgds,

R.

Actually you can get free software... it's finding it is the hard part!

Ok let's clear up a few things.

You have a USB to MIDI converter, there you shouldn't need an soundcard with MIDI.

You'll need a sequencer of sorts. I'd suggest looking on Computer Music magazines and see if they have any freebies on there, it's always a good time of year as they like to get you hooked on their mags. I've picked up Cadenza, Cubase Lite and Cakewalk over the years.
Next you'll have to make sure you MIDI is set up. GM should do much of this for you, but just check your channels are set up to each other and both have transmit and receive set. However if you use thru option on the sequencer, you may have to turn one of these of.

Hope that helps a little.

I am not expecting anything for free. But I think you would agree with me that when you buy expensive equipment, it is to the manufacturer's interest that you don't get frustrated for a simple issue like this, especially when the cost involved is highly minor compared to the price you paid for the equipment itself.
It's a bit like providing a simple zoom lens or at least enough information on how to get and use one, when you pay some $6000 or more for a Camera.

In simple words, I would have not refused to buy the Clavinova if it was some $100 more expensive with a software+Interface bundle provided with it. If you are ready to pay $6000, you would pay $6100 rather than waste so many days trying to find a simple midi sequencer, and not even find any on the manufacturer's own web site.

This is very useful feedback.
I think checking for a Computer Magazine will be my next step and hopefully will find there further information about this subject for an absolute beginner like myself.

I would still strongly criticize Yamaha for the poor documentation on this particular matter.

Thank you for this reply.
