Have a customer who is going from R1T1 with a 6 port exp cart and NAM to the same config with 6.1 XC and CP150. Would it be better to do the upgrade on site using the upgrade tool, or use another ksu and set up as mudh as possible back at the office?
Thanks
Tom

personally i'd like to do a clean install after a manual backup...ie without using the upgrade tool

The answer depends on the customer. If the customer doesn't mind the down time required to upgrade your system, then you could use the customer's KSU.

If down time is a factor, then you would want to obtain a backup and upgrade to a different KSU prior to going on site.

Also remember to upgrade with the non-XC tool as the current KSU is not XC and with a 6-port card in the unit. You can switch the non-XC software to XC after you reach the 4.0 level.

Agreed senk1s. Do as much Database collection as possible and start from scratch..You'll be happy you did..

Make sure you have the latest MR of 6.1

Agreed clean slate. There's just too much addition programing required to make the upgrade tool beneficial.

While I also agree that the best way is to start from scratch, the question was concerning upgrading the existing system or performing an upgrade on a different KSU.

Ultimately, by doing a clean start and programming the KSU from scratch, the down time or other factors may not permit this.

Use your judgement on the best way to accomlish the task based on the customer's wishes.

if you have a KSU to spare ...
take a manual backup on the present system
do the configuration on the spare KSU
replace the old with the new ...

that'll actually save a lot of downtime ...infact it'll be lesser than upgrading the software onsite

thanks for all the input, stopped st the account on Friday and discovered there is no RAD on site. Looks like I'll be doing a real "manual" backup with my pencil and inputting into a spare ksu we have.
Thanks Again
Tom

Tom,

It's faster to use a pencil than a computer in your circumstance.

Computer pro's and con's:

Pencils work when wet;
To sharpen a pencil you don't have to reinstall Windows xx;
It's easy to 'get the lead out' when in a hurry; and
When you break a pencil you end up with two of them.

Cheers
PhM
