does anyone know what a microswitch is or have any useful information on what they do???

They are small switches. From about 1"x3/4"x1/4" to as small as 3/8"x3/8"/1/8". Used in machinery as limit switches or positioning indicating switches. In early computers as track0 switch in floppy drive, door open switch, write protect detect switch. In printers as paper out, head limit, form out, or cover open. Name started as product of microswitch corporation but has become generic. Power on switch on external modems generally is a microswitch. You've probably seen them.

I've got you email address and some things are clicking together. I'll scan a couple of datasheet pictures , or maybe scan some switches, and send them to you. May not be today though.
