I have a Dell 4400 running XP. After doing some OS updates, the cd burner sofware (Roxio) stopped recognizing blank media, and thus won't record. This seems to be a common and known problem, there are faq's on it (update the roxio sofware, done, no joy). I called microsoft, they said "Roxio's problem". Called Roxio, they said "microsoft's problem". It acts like a driver's been stepped on but no idea which.

Any ideas?

It is a well known problem, however if you have Easy Cd Creator
v5.2 or above it should work (acording to Roxio support), however Direct CD won't as it seems to clash with the built in CD burning software of Win XP.
Try using Nero Burning Rom instead, it works fine with XP and has caused (for me anyway) no problems.

You may also experience shutdown/log off problems with Easy CD & Direct CD see faq779-2361 for info on the windows update to fix this problem.

I don't know of a way to disable XP's built in burning features, but perhaps someone else here may know.

If it annoys Microsoft then it's worth doing, and doing well!!

since i got out from using EZ CD Creator, i have less headache, less coasters, less b*tching.
More happy by using Nero, once you learn how to use it, you will swear by it. i believe the new Nero has a step by step menu feature

the Tech staff at nero are very very helpful, i bought the standard Nero, the Nero Max

check out their website, they have tone of resources that can help you understand the burning cd world

Thanks for the tip on nero, I'll check it out. Roxio 5.2 doesn't work any better on my setup....

Roxio doesn't work for me either...I am gonna instal NERO tomm. and hopefuly it will work... I have not failed; I merely found 100,000 different ways of not succeding...

Interesting! The WinXP CD Burning update from late last year? is provided to MS by Roxio. Works fine for me with CD-R media but that is all I use [when I put files/programs on a CD it has to be readable in any number of drives]. Serious CD burning/copying is done on my Win98SE with NTI CD Maker.

I just installed Roxio Platinum yesterday, it's been working fine. No problem reading CD's created by Roxio on other CD players.

Just make sure you don't install the direct CD stuff. I've heard that's a major problem with XP and 2K.

Is that WinXP CD Burn update something I should get or would it already be on mine....WinXP Home V.2002???

juneaumark, can't say for sure if you need it but I haven't installed any other burning software on my WinXP Pro. The update hasn't shown up anywhere except on the update site, may be in the first service pack later this year.

Usually can't have 2 softwares like DirectCD or InCD that make calls to the hardware, causes problems. Shouldn't need the update if using something like Nero or NTI or any of the others available.

If I were to do it over today, I'd go with NTI CD Maker just because I like/am familiar with it on my Win98SE computers.

I don't use DirectCD or InCD as I don't use CD-RW disks. When I put data on a CD, I intend not to erase/change it, makes a permanent record.
