Microsoft updates download but wont install

Hi
I am using a laptop with win XP Pro and an internal 56k modem. I am able to d/l the critical updates from the microsoft site but never seem to complete the install. The install progress stalls. The same thing happens each time I try, even after a reboot. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Go to the normal update site and try downloading just ONE at a time.

Make sure you are a local admin on the pc.
