Is it possible to import data into Microsoft Organization Chart - to enable automatic building of charts?

Thanks

Hi Choggarth, use Visio for importing data into Org. Charts. Visio is an awesome tool for 'importing' functions.

PPT 97 and 2000 use a 2nd program for creating 'Organiational Chart' and we are not aboe to Import. PPT XP no longer runs a 2nd program for creating Org. Charts, its just part of MS Office XP now....but you still cannot import.

More importantly, Visio is the ideal program for importing.

Gud luk... tazman.

Thanks - I thought that might be the answer - disappointing because Visio costs money :) ... but useful to have it confirmed

If you only have the MS Office Suite, is the MS organization Chart (that's copyrighted in 1996) the most updated and best thing to use to create an org chart?

Nate and CHoggarth,

The "best" software for creating an Org Chart... might well depend on the expectations of the end-user. Some end-users will prefer that the software have the ability to "automate" the generation of Org Charts, including the ability to import data. In such a case, it appears that Visio might be a good choice.

In other cases, a user might prefer to have "complete flexibility" in being able to set up an Org Chart, or whatever.

In a previous job where I was required to produce "special" charts, graphs and Org Charts, I had Visio recommended to me. In fact, another employee with her significant Visio experience attempted to duplicate what I had been creating - and failed miserably. I also tried Visio, and achieved the same poor results - in comparison to the high standards I had set and were expected of me.

The software I had been using was CorelDRAW version 5.0. The most recent version of CorelDRAW is 11, but unfortunately Corel Corporation dropped required "filters" (after version 5.0) that were necessary in order for CorelDRAW to interface with CorelCHART - a product that came together with CorelDRAW as a "suite" of bundled software.

Because CorelDRAW is a "complete graphics package" - it's basically only limited by one's imagination.

For Org Charts, CorelCHART is not required. It's actually preferable (even with CorelDRAW 5.0) to create the Org Chart within CorelDRAW. With CorelDRAW, you can also expect to be able to import data. But a "tradeoff" with "automation" to automatically create an Org Chart in favor of the "complete flexibility", is that in CorelDRAW, you will need to manually move your Org Chart components around.

But PLEASE appreciate that within CorelDRAW, there are many features - too numerous to mention - that will essentially "blow you away" in terms on the ability to "dress up" an Org Chart to make it look "totally professional" - especially when compared to those generated "automatically" with other software.

I can't resist providing "one small example" of a little feature... the "duplicate" function. This permits the user to create one Org Chart box (with Name, Title, proper Font size, color, border, etc)... and then "duplicate" the box across and down to create a grid of text boxes. If the overall size is not "exact", it's real easy to stretch or shrink ALL the boxes, or any individual box.

It's naturally "impossible" for me to put into words what obviously needs to be seen and experienced to be fully appreciated. So, for anyone out there who might prefer the "total flexibility" in order to generate a "professional" look, you might consider searching the net for CorelDRAW 5.0. I've been able to locate copies priced in the $20-$40 range.

Here's a link to a posting where an individual thanked me for "introducing" her to CorelDRAW release 5.0. She went back to using this "old" version because she "confirmed" it's MUCH more capable than today's software for generation of professional looking graphs and charts.

Here's the link... thread238-274564.

I hope you find this of interest. :)
